There was a time when it hadn’t meant so much to me. Even then it had been important. But now, now it was the only thing on my mind. I had searched the whole house, but I couldn’t find it anywhere. I know I was wearing it yesterday. I know it!
I never took it off. I hadn’t taken it off in over a year and a half. Not since my Charly had kissed me goodbye and turned to board that plane with the rest of his unit. He had promised me that when he returned, the necklace would be replaced with a ring.
“This stone was my mother’s and I want to see that on your finger.” He had said as he clasped it around my neck.
I touched my bare neck almost expecting to feel the delicate chain holding the solitary stone. But it wasn’t there. How could I tell him I lost it? I couldn’t! I would do anything not to have to tell him.
It was at that moment that I saw them coming. The two officers walked slowly up to my door. Neither smiled. My heart caught in my throat.
“Charly!” I cried. “Please be okay!”
At that moment I wanted so badly for him to be there.
I would have done anything just to be able to tell him about the necklace.
