Friday Fun Facts – Longest English Word

Is’s always fun to play with words, so I thought I would share a few fun facts to lighten your day and bring a smile to your face.

Do you know what the longest word is?
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
Wow, I spelt that right the first time. Imagine that.

I heard, somewhere, that this wasn’t just a silly word but had an actual meaning, but when I look it up in the dictionary, the definition was as follows:

adjective
(used as a nonsense word by children to express approval or to represent the longest word in English.)

This doesn’t sound so much like a word to me. Can a “made-up word” be considered a real word?

This isn’t the longest word, however. (Sorry to break all those childish hearts)

The longest word is:
pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, a word that refers to a lung disease contracted from the inhalation of very fine silica particles, specifically from a volcano; medically, it is the same as silicosis.

It’s not at all as fun as supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, and I see why children would much prefer running around saying Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious than pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.
