Friday Fiction – Desertion

A Flash Fiction
by Kristena Mears

Moist droplets flowed down my cheeks as I sat on the edge of my bed. My best friend stood quietly next to me not knowing how to comfort or stop the endless tears.

“Why does he leave me like this?”

“You shouldn’t work yourself up in this way. It’s not healthy.”

“But… why? He comes back after his long absences and I cave. Time and again I give into his sweetness and warmth. I forgive him and let him back into my bed.”

“Kara, you have to stop! You can’t keep dwelling on this day after day. This is going to keep happening. It’s who he is. You knew he was like this before you let him move in. It’s in his nature, you know. Now you need to learn to deal with it. ”

“Deal with it? You think I should just allow him to come and go as he pleases? You do realize that two days last week he didn’t come home at all. What do you think he was doing all night? And you want me to just deal with it?”

“Yes Kara, This isn’t that unusual.”

I looked up shocked. How could she say that? “Does Charlie leave you at night?”

“Well, no. But that’s different.”

“Why? Why is he so different?”

“Charlie doesn’t like to leave the house. I can’t get him outside to save my life.”

“I do everything I can to keep my Pete happy. I clean up after him. I buy his favorite foods. I get him special things to keep him entertained. I even share my bed! But that doesn’t seem to be enough for him.”

“It is. I know it is. I see him with you. I can tell how much he loves you.”

“Then, why does he leave?”

“Kara! He’s a cat! That’s what cats do. Don’t worry, he’ll be back in time for dinner.”
